The first arthouse cinema in Liberia

In close partnership with and thanks to the financial support of the European Union, we’ve launched a new initiative for the promotion of human rights, cultural heritage, creativity and the creative industries in Liberia.

Through a consortium of fantastic partners – including SPARK, Kriterion Monrovia and the Young Urban Achievers Foundation, and with additional technical support by the Dutch organisation Engineers Without Borders that will help in the development of the design,  by mid-2019 the doors of a social enterprise arthouse cinema will be open to the public in Monrovia.

This unique initiative is the first of its kind supported by the European Union in Africa.

The new arthouse cinema will be an independent cultural venue and hub for creativity, arts and innovation in the form of a social enterprise run entirely by Liberian university students. The European Union Delegation to Liberia chose to partner with a local student organisation Kriterion Monrovia to bring to life the dream of many young people in Liberia of having a space available where the creativity of young Liberians could be encouraged to generate new cultural and artistic products through various forms including film making, visual arts, photography and much more.

During SPARK’s annual,  IGNITE conference in 2017, founder of Kriterion Monrovia, Ms Pandora Hodge, pitched the idea to the audience as one of the three finalists of the Rebuilding Futures Startup Competition. Despite being unsuccessful to win the €10,000 startup grant, we’re delighted to be able to continue our partnership with Kriterion Monrovia, now with support from the EU.
