Syrian and Turkish youth visited Çanakkale Martyrs' Memorial

“While witnessing history, we had the chance to meet new people and make new friends.” A social cohesion trip brought Syrian and Turkish students together after the earthquake and the exams.

SPARK organised a trip to Çanakkale Martyrs’ Memorial with over 100 Turkish and Syrian university students supported by the Pathway for Higher Education in Türkiye programme funded by the European Union.

The trip began at the Historical National Park of Troy, an archaeological marvel that traces its origins back to 3,000 BC. As the students stood among the ancient ruins, the tour guides narrated the legendary story of the Trojan War at the site where it transpired. The remnants from various eras left the students in awe, providing a glimpse into the captivating tapestry of human history.

Alin Bekir, a Syrian student at Harran University, explained: “Having this trip right after the stressful exam period made all of us very happy…I thank SPARK for bringing us together and enabling us to collect unforgettable memories.”

The focal point of the trip was the Çanakkale Martyrs’ Memorial, a monument erected to honour the soldiers who lost their lives during the Çanakkale Wars. The students visited monuments, cemeteries, and historical places. Here, the students paid their respects to Turkish and Syrian soldiers who died together, recognising the price for today’s independence. This meaningful journey serves as a bridge between nations and cultures, fostering unity and peace and reminding the students of the shared values that bind us together.

Medine Kanıoğlu, an economics student from Mersin University, said: “Feeling the history, going back to the ancient times, and seeing the places of Çanakkale war deeply moved me. Making new friends and exchanging culture made us all happy.”

SPARK is committed to contributing to improved social cohesion between Turkish and Syrian youth living in Türkiye through the partnerships with higher education institutions. The Pathway for Higher Education in Türkiye programme, funded by the European Union, supports empowering and inspiring young minds.
