Cooperative Support
Rwanda’s agricultural cooperatives are becoming major actors in the economic growth of the country. Their increasingly important role has been recognised by local ministries, whereas originally, cooperatives were seen as simply groups of farmers cooperating voluntarily, without a clear structure.
With strong values, such as joint ownership, equal participation, transparency and solidarity, cooperatives have the potential to become successful resilient leaders in economic development and job creation.
SPARK has supported cooperatives in Rwanda, Yemen, Burundi and South Sudan. Introducing skills training on effective management, governance and operation, for groups that often don’t consider themselves as business structures. We provide knowledge services to create resilient business models.
Through the 100 cooperatives that we supported so far, over 1,800 jobs were created. Many more farmers in fragile regions can benefit from similar programmes.
