©2019 Tom Nicholson. 18/06/2019. Ramallah, Palestine. Samah Tomaleh and Jehad Jaber, both 21, have been operating their digital marketing startup TwoDesign for 8 months. Based in Ramallah, they say: “since there are no job opportunities in Palestine, a person has to create their own”.

The two talented friends noticed that while expensive marketing agencies were affordable for big businesses, smaller businesses struggled to keep up their digital and online marketing strategies. The young women decided to pool their skills, bridge the gap and create TwoDesign; a startup providing graphic design, social media, photography and digital marketing services at low costs for small businesses.

SPARK’s BSIS programme provided them with a small startup capital, which they used to register their business with the Ministry of Labour. Leaders, a local business incubator also provided them with a lot of support, from business training to an office space, even a laptop when they saw the girls trying to work on the same computer! In the first month, TwoDesign only made $100, but after all the support and hard work, they’re now able to employ 5 people and have 30 fixed clients each month.

Higher Education and Jobs for Youth during Crisis

An online conference.

Moving to Online Education

Online education, long out of favour and regarded as a second-rate alternative in many countries, is, suddenly—in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic – essential in avoiding the loss of an academic year. Some education experts see the current situation as a chance to enhance online education, take advantage of the interactivity and tracking of student learning possible in the digital environment, and end the over-dependence on physical presence in the classroom. Many TVET institutions and universities have seized the moment, in fact, to move their education online rapidly and can offer up lessons learned.

Creating Jobs during Crisis

The impact of Covid-19 on small and medium sized enterprises is huge, especially in fragile states. On the supply side, including access to labour, supply chain, transportation and logistics could be disrupted. And on the demand side, SMEs could face a sudden loss of clients, order cancellations, and severe shortage of liquidity. Now SMEs are racing to adjust and see how their business model needs to adapt to the new situation. Many are accelerating their online services, others switching to completely different products. How can local and international organisations best support entrepreneurs in fragile situations in adjusting to this crisis?
