In recent years, severe conflicts have forced a significant part of the Burundian population to become internally displaced or seek refuge in neighbouring countries - Tanzania, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
As the conflict abated, local authorities and the UN developed solutions to enable the safe and voluntary return for those that had fled their homes. Since 2017, almost 80,000 people have returned.
Together with the Burundi Business Incubator (BBIN), SPARK support those returning and rebuilding their lives in their old homes. Through coaching, leadership training and with financial support, returning refugees can become entrepreneurs. Boosting small, livelihood businesses creates important economic opportunities for the returning and local communities, which promotes long-term reintegration and contributes to social cohesion.
