Deradicalisation, Training, Teachers (DTT)
With a war being fought against so called Islamic State just miles away, young people living in Erbil and Halabja, in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KR-I), have been vulnerable to radicalisation by extremist groups.
In order to counteract and prevent young people from becoming radicalised, the DTT programme trained teachers and professors at high schools and universities to identify potential early-stage radicalisation in their young students.
Teachers received mentoring, while an outreach project raised awareness of the causes of radicalisation and linked trained teachers with parents, so that preventative or de-radicalisation measures could be taken.
SPARK established an Advisory Board consisting of senior Kurdistan Regional Government (KR-G) representatives from the Ministries of Education, Higher Education, Labour and Social Affairs, and Endowments and Religious Affairs.
