The future of work depends on green jobs, digital jobs and flexible jobs. Employment around the world is dramatically shifting. Globalisation, digitisation, automation and the COVID-19 pandemic mean it's now time to reimagine jobs and ensure the most vulnerable people in society are included in the transition.
The virtual IGNITE8 conference by SPARK and IFC examines how women, refugees, and other vulnerable youth can play a key role in reimagining jobs across the Middle East, North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Our build-it-yourself, flexible programme allows you to attend short, online sessions according to your schedule.

The Unheard Case of Agribusiness in Syria
PanelThe Unheard Case of Agribusiness in Syria
The agricultural sector has always played a vital role in Syria’s economy, for example contributing 25% of Syria’s GDP in 2010. However, the war has exposed and exacerbated the fragility of the sector, which has had a limited ability to cope with climatic and economic shocks. Institutional reform of the agricultural sector may hence be a way to build food security and inclusive growth for Syrian people. In this session Tilman Brück talks about his study into the agricultural sector in Syria and offers his insights of relevance beyond Syria on how best to support smallholders and commercial farmers starting to re-engage in post-conflict markets and with institutions – and how best to measure such transformation.

Financial Innovation for Refugees
PanelFinancial Innovation for Refugees
In order to start or grow a business, refugees need access to finance. A bank can provide a bank account, the possibility for a loan and other traditional financial services. However, refugees are increasingly introduced to new opportunities by new fintech businesses and organisations. This session discusses how new technologies, such as data analysis using digital ID and alternative credit scoring methodologies, can realise financial inclusion and access to finance for refugees. What are the latest trends in this new market? How can refugees for example export their credit history? Who owns these data? And: how are the traditional banks anticipating on these new fintech startups? In other words: how can we improve the access to finance for refugees?

Investing in African Fragile States: Looking Forward
PanelInvesting in African Fragile States: Looking Forward
Fragility is on the rise and the African region is disproportionately affected – COVID-19, climate change, conflict, forced displacement, and economic and political instability are prominent and often intersecting issues across the continent. In fragile and conflict-affected situations (FCS), the pandemic exacerbated already formidable challenges, rendering these complex business environments even more difficult. The role of the private sector in creating jobs and opportunities is more urgent than ever, and for IFC, supporting and investing in FCS is a key strategic priority. This session will be an opportunity to share 13 years of lessons learned for investors and entrepreneurs discussing how to invest responsibly in African FCS; what has worked in these markets, how the investment landscape in Africa and African FCS has changed since the onset of the pandemic, and the opportunities and considerations that lie ahead in a COVID-plus landscape.

Afghanistan: What Now?
PanelAfghanistan: What Now?
In the wake of the Taliban’s move to national power, there are a lot of adjustments and uncertainties. The humanitarian sector is warning of a looming crisis in Afghanistan, a country which is very much dependent on international support. However, how accessible will Afghanistan remain for international organisations to provide aid and development programmes? For example to support small and medium sized businesses. What about the current sanctions on the Taliban, can international organisations continue to work under these sanctions, as they have done before in Syria? In the meantime a flux of Afghan refugees into the region has started. How can we support these refugees and the hosting communities which are already dealing with some many challenges? This IGNITE session addresses these issues with international and Afghan experts and sheds some light on the necessary next steps to take.

Green Entrepreneurship
PanelGreen Entrepreneurship
Green entrepreneurs, as the ILO states, provide the hotbed for starting and sustaining a green economy by providing and boosting demand for green products and services, introducing greener production techniques, and creating green jobs. So, we think: ‘Less emissions and less pollution, that is great! But it is probably more expensive, who will pay for that?’ However, in the context of fragile regions, solar energy is not just green, it’s off-grid quality also makes whole communities energy independent. Gone are the electricity black-outs, medicine and food waste, fear of not being able to communicate due to an empty laptop. These new technologies improve people’s living standards and their productivity. They make fragile communities stronger. There is no trade-off in this narrative. What does this change of narrative mean for SMEs? Do you set up or promote your business differently as a so-called green entrepreneur? What are the challenges in the region that we work?
