Workshop (Morning)
Women Entrepreneurs in Conflict
Workshop (Morning)Women Entrepreneurs in Conflict
Women are an integral part of the economy. When more women work, economies grow. Working women and women business-owners in fragile and conflict-affected regions often unique challenges. Barriers to workplace equality still exist and access to finance for women entrepreneurs is often more limited. How can governments and the private sector facilitate access to markets and support women in the economy? What takes place at the intersections where considerations of women, economy and conflict meet? How does conflict impact the role of women in the economy and shape their destinies? During this workshop, hear from and speak with young Libyan and Palestinian women who are revolutionising the start-up scene, creating jobs and breaking down barriers.
Speakers: Richard Catherall (Moderator, Entrepreneur), Hala Bughaighis (Co-Founder, Jusoor Centre for Studies and Development), Faten El Houni (Libyan business owner), Abir Sarras (RNW Media), Maraz Abdulsamad (Entrepreneur supported under LEAD), Jumana Salous (Programme Manager, Business Women Forum Palestine)
Workshop (Afternoon)
Creating Jobs in Syria
Workshop (Afternoon)Creating Jobs in Syria
Around 2010 the unemployment rate in Syria was at 8.6%, but after 8 years of war exceeds 60%. A third of the population has left Syria, and of those remaining 40% is internally displaced. The country is meanwhile de-facto divided in several zones of control. Many business men and women have transferred their businesses outside Syria, no major investments are forthcoming in the foreseeable future and jobs, especially for youth, are scarce. How can a start be made in early economic recovery and where? How to plan for the return to Syria of the mostly highly educated Syrian diaspora, or at least engage them in this effort from a distance? What roles can NGOs and businesses play in this process and how to navigate in this complex political and economic (war) situation and ensure one does not cause harm in doing so?
Speakers: Ola Batta (Moderator, SPARK), Ibrahim Olabi (Executive Director, Syrian Legal Development Programme), Salam Said (Expert Researcher in Economic Studies, Bremen University), Ruba Mimi (Middle East Regional Manager, RNW Media), Said Sulaiman (Minister of Local Administration and Services, Syrian Interim Government), Ahmad Alshab (Operations Director, Orange)

Workshop (Afternoon)
Do Jobs Prevent Violent Extremism?
Workshop (Afternoon)Do Jobs Prevent Violent Extremism?
The main reason why youth join extremist groups is often said to be poverty and no job prospects. More factors influence the radicalisation process of youth in for example the MENA region, but hopelessness and no view of income are certainly main drivers. The question is: can you use job creation and entrepreneurship programmes as a means to prevent violent extremism? Is that ethical, what are the risks involved, and what side effects can it cause? Can you also afford not to run such programmes? In this workshop we examine job creation programmes, how sensitise them to violent extremism and how to reach goals that prevent violent extremism.
Speakers: Fulco van Deventer (Deputy Director, Human Security Collective), Ahmed Sameh (Mideast Creatives Project Manager, Hivos), Daniel McCormick (Regional Deputy Programme Manager, SPARK), Fia van der Klugt (Senior Policy Officer Stabilisation and Humanitarian Aid Department, Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs)

Partnerships for Jobs, Part 2 (Europe)
Workshop (Afternoon)Partnerships for Jobs, Part 2 (Europe)
Networks, resources, innovation and experience put the private sector a unique position to support refugees. But how to take concrete action? In this session Ben&Jerry’s, international NGOs such as The Entrepreneurial Refugee Network (TERN) and Natakallam, and the City of Amsterdam share their vision and best practices on how to support refugees, create jobs and integrate refugees in our societies. What role can the private sector take in the skills development of refugees? What role do NGOs play in these partnerships? And how can we involve donors more closely into these efforts?
Speakers: Tamar Schrofer (Moderator), Fred Kastner (Entrepreneur and international development consultant, TERN), Aline Sara (CEO, NaTakallam), Chris Gale (Head of Social Mission Strategy, Europe, Ben&Jerry’s), Sabina Kekic (City of Amsterdam), Zahraa Attar (Trainee at the Young Professionals Program for status holders at the municipality of Amsterdam)
Workshop (Afternoon)
Matching Youth to Jobs
Workshop (Afternoon)Matching Youth to Jobs
Providing youth with an efficient pathway to sustainable employment is a complex challenge. Students need degree programmes that not only suit their talents but also meet real labour market demands. TVET programmes, while sometimes seen as less ‘prestigious’ than more academic ones, are essential. During their studies, extra-curricular activities and workplace learning (internships) can help develop student’s skills and attitudes towards work, including ethics, punctuality, intercultural sensitivity, leadership and diplomacy. Hard and soft skills are equally important in taking a positive career start and finding sustainable and satisfactory employment, such as drafting a convincing CV and proper language and communications skills. A well-functioning alumni network can provide invaluable support, contacts and networks to quality employment, through professional updates, short courses, webinars, etc. This workshop explores the various methods that youth, especially refugee youth, can be supported into work.
Speakers: Ceren Genc (Moderator, SPARK), Botan Majeed Ahmad Al-Hadad (Dean of Erbil Technology Institute, Erbil Polytechnic University), Rahaf Alashouri (Syrian graduate living in Turkey), Amir Saab (Entrepreneurship Consultant), Muhammad El-Sharebeni (Program development and partnerships coordinator, Masaraat Project, RNW), Marije Bedaux (Career Coach, University of Leiden)
Workshop (Afternoon)
Millennials doing Agribusiness in Africa
Workshop (Afternoon)Millennials doing Agribusiness in Africa
What is needed to boost young people’s engagment in agribusiness? 77 percent of Sub-Saharan Africa’s population is younger than 35 – that’s around 770 million people! However, farmlands are filled with older generations, for example in Rwanda the average age of farmers is 55 years old. Agribuiness is vital for sub-Saharan Africa’s food security, but how to engage a rural, youthful population with dreams of leaving to the big cities? In this workshop, we discuss with stakeholders where in the production and process chain jobs can be created for youth and hear from young, successful agri-entrepreneurs themselves.
Speakers: Giselle Schellekens (Country Manager, SPARK), Regis Umugiraneza (Founder, CARL Group), Isabelle Roger (International Cotton Programme Coordinator, Solidaridad), Floriane Kaneza (Programme Manager, SPARK)
Workshop (Morning)
Partnerships for Jobs, Part 1 (MENA)
Workshop (Morning)Partnerships for Jobs, Part 1 (MENA)
Global catastrophes can’t be solved globally, but need a local approach, by local partnerships. Public and civil society organisations can bring data, knowledge and seed money. Private sector is able to scale up by leveraging with commercial capital and efficient processes. However, it appears to be very challenging to bring these two worlds together. What does it take? In this workshop we, a partnership between ING, EIF, EU Madad, SPARK and Kosgeb, share our experience with an Access to Finance project in Turkey and with your input we want to develop new partnerships, bringing together capital, capacity and competences to support refugees in the MENA region, and elsewhere.
Speakers: Judith Rosenbrandt (Programme Manager, Crosswise Works), Roy Budjhawan (Head, ING Impact Finance), Mohammed Skaik (Regional Business Development Manager, SPARK), Perrine Pouget (Investment Manager for social impact, European Investment Fund)
Workshop (Morning)
Digital Skills for Refugee Jobs
Workshop (Morning)Digital Skills for Refugee Jobs
Despite the talents and skills the refugees have, unemployment rates are the highest among this community. Many refugees have turned into e-working to open new opportunities. In this session, we will be brainstorming the challenges and advances that face refugees who want to establish their own careers as freelancers using the SWOT analysis model. We will also hear stories from refugees freelance, support organisations, and policymakers.
Speakers: Ahmad Bayram (Regional Manager, Techstars), Josephine Goube (CEO, Techfugees), Aline Sara (CEO, NaTakallam), Joud Tanta (Co-Founder, Uniqon), Marcello Bonatto (Co-Founder, Re:Coded)
Workshop (Morning)
Access to Finance: Creating Jobs in Africa
Workshop (Morning)Access to Finance: Creating Jobs in Africa
Its commonly believed that access to finance is the only golden ticket to growing small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in sub-Saharan Africa in order to boost job creation. However, critics argue that the relationship between finance and job growth is more subtle. There is not a proven correlation between increasing access to finance and the hiring of more employees. During this session, deep dive with some expert opinions into the actual impact of financing on job growth, with a particular focus on how this works in rural, sub-Saharan African communities. What have micro-financing institutes in South Sudan learnt? How do financing organisations in Rwanda and NGO programmes stimulate the development of financial sectors? What can they recommend to the stakeholders involved?
Speakers: Firas Deeb (Moderator, SPARK), Yengi Lokule (Chief Executive Officer, Rural Finance Initiative), Jean Bosco Iyacu (Director of Programmes, Access to Finance Rwanda), Floriane Favie Kaneza (Programme Manager, SPARK)
Workshop (Morning)
Business Support Centre Revisited
Workshop (Morning)Business Support Centre Revisited
In this session we will delve deep into the factors that allow incubators and accelerators succeed and/or fail. A variety of different approaches will be discussed, using Jordan as a case that can also apply to similar countries in the MIddle East and Africa. An emphasis will be placed on the transition from traditional incubators and accelerators into one-stop-shop Business Support Centers as well as a look at all the relevant stakeholders and their roles within the entrepreneurial environment.
In Pursuit of Evidence on Jobs for Stability & Peace
Workshop (Morning)In Pursuit of Evidence on Jobs for Stability & Peace
Employment programmes are considered to reduce the likelihood of violence by increasing opportunity, reducing idleness and tackling inequality and grievances between groups. Programming is expected to have positive impacts in places with weak social stability. Recent research has offered direction for field testing and impact assessment but it currently lacks consistency in approaches in outcomes. Systematic rigorous evidence is, therefore, still lacking. It is often simply assumed that employment programmes achieve their wider goals. This session introduces a combined approach from researchers, implementers and donors that aims to plot the path towards closing current knowledge gaps.
Speakers: Marcel Smits (Director of the Europe Office, Institute for Economics & Peace), Fia van der Klugt (Senior Policy Officer, Stabilisation and Humanitarian Aid Department, Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs), Laila Al Amine (MercyCorps Lebanon), Wolfgang Stojetz (Senior Researcher, International Security and Development Centre), Thomet Nieves (Technical specialist Employment & Peace, ILO), Yannick du Pont (Director, SPARK)

The Power of Mentoring
Workshop (Morning)The Power of Mentoring
In this participatory session, we will explore the ‘Power of Mentoring’ to develop Human Capital through sharing how mentoring can support the growth and resilience of entrepreneurs in fragile environments. Drawing on the experiences of participants in the room, we will uncover what builds the foundation of the most impactful and enduring mentoring relationships, and what supports and drives those relationships to succeed. This session is an opportunity for participants to reflect on their own experiences, both to increase self-awareness and deepen understanding of how the role of a skilled mentor supports and accelerates greater innovation, impact and sustainability. We will also invite participants to share what it takes to run successful mentoring programmes, learning not just from Mowgli Mentoring’s experiences but those of others.
Speakers: Richard Bellars (Moderator, Mowgli Mentoring), Maia Gedde (Mowgli Mentoring), Saskia Harkema (CEO, Foundation Faces of Change), Astara Maiure (Five One Labs Iraq), Samar Dani (INJAZ Lebanon)
